2012: Time and Prophecy in the Mesoamerican World

January 31, 2011

Happening in Austin, Texas in late March is 2012: Time and Prophecy in the Mesoamerican World. This is an academic get-together, but some of the talks might appeal to the general 2012er public:

Maya Apocalypse Soon? – Dr. Anthony Aveni
Prophecies and Profits: the New Age Movement and 2012  – Dr. Reese-Taylor
A History of 2012: Mayanism, the New Age, and the Unintended Consequences of Well-Intentioned Research – Dr. Hoopes

Preparing for Doomsday – Some Products

January 21, 2011

The Toronto Sun has listed the many things you could purchase for 2012 survival, ranging from bulk lots of toothpicks to multi-level bunkers. Of note are the various survival seed banks, costing $139 or so. This one lists all the seeds in the pack. If these are all plants that will thrive in your location, then all good. But otherwise, perhaps hand-pick your survival seeds. And start growing them now, rather than waiting until after the SHTF.

And it is nice to see Ark II mentioned – the granddaddy of survival bunkers, up in Canada.

South Africa Fugitives Shot Dead by Police

January 20, 2011

According to media reports, the fugitive 2012ers, Philippe and Agnis Neniere, wanted for the murder of a policeman, never left the property where they had lived for 12 years. Having eluded the police for a week using their survivalist training, they have been killed in a “Hollywood-style” shootout with police. Story and video at The Guardian

2012ers Kill Cop in South Africa

January 18, 2011

Now it is getting serious, and unfortunately 2012 survivalists will come under extra scrutiny by the authorities.

Fifty police are searching for a French couple who have lived in South Africa for 12 years. Philippe Pierre Meniere (aged 60) and Agnes Jeanne Jardel (55) are survival experts who are believed to belong to a cult, the Ramtha School of Enlightenment. The head of the cult, JZ Knight, who channels a spiritual entity named Ramtha, has told followers of a pole shift that will occur in 2012. A farmer sought to have them evicted from his land, saying that they were in possession of illegal weapons, and that they wanted to build an underground bunker. During the eviction a police officer was shot dead, and another was injured.

Seeing as they have been in South Africa for 12 years, and they are a long way from the mountains favored as a survival spot by Patrick Geryl, one could presume that the two are not connected.

2012 Antarctica Asteroid Hoax

January 18, 2011

You may have read in forums and dodgy news sites this story:

“University of British Columbia Professor published an on-line article that projected an 800m asteroid would hit Antarctica in the fall of 2012.”

The story goes on to say that the asteroid was spotted by the Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Sub millimeter Telescope (BLAST) at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. There are two major things wrong with this story, letting us know that it is a hoax:

1) BLAST is designed to study galaxies, not look for asteroids
2) You don’t need a telescope in Antarctica to spot an asteroid that will crash into Antarctica

Now the website that supposedly published this story (then removed it two days later) has posted a response:

No such article ever appeared on the UBC Physics & Astronomy web site.

This is a story on a par with the annual “Mars as big as the Full Moon” hoax that makes the rounds on the web, except that in this case, it can cause people undue alarm. The only reaction to this story should be amusement, followed by anger that some people are willing to prey on public fears and their interest in astronomy.

Daily Telegraph on 2012

January 14, 2011

2012 is in the news a lot recently, from being a topic embraced by a Tuscon murderer, to a date being pointed to by various apocalyptic signs. The Daily Telegraph writes about how a convergence of 2012 stories is feeding the hype:

  • Harold Camping says Saturday May 21, 2011 will be Judgment Day, and he has many followers (and billboards).
  • “Aflockalypse”.
  • The Dogon tribe of Mali  believe 2012 will see the return of aliens in a spaceship that looks like a blue star.
  • Ancient Cherokee and Egyptian calendars also end in 2012
  • The Bible Code author predicts a comet collision in 2012

Of course doomsday stories are always most prevalent in the media around New Year, so expect next Dec/Jan to be overflowing with 2012 information.

Jared Lee Loughner Was A 2012er

January 12, 2011

According to his former classmate Caitie Parker, Loughner was “oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy“. His other obsessions included 9/11, currency, grammar, lucid dreaming and government control.

Loughner made a few posts (as Erad3) at AboveTopSecret.com , a forum that covers similar topics to few 2012 forums online. These types of forums typically have a few mentally unstable members, giving regular members something chilling to think about.

NASA: 2012 = Silliest Movie

January 4, 2011

Experts at NASA have named 2012, the apocalyptic blockbuster movie, as the most absurd science-fiction film.

Also criticised was Armageddon, in which blowing up an asteroid (as we all now know) would make things worse for our planet because there would now be lots of smaller asteroids hurtling towards us.

2012 remains an “exceptional and extraordinary case“, said Donald Yeomans, head of NASA’s Near-Earth Asteroid Rendezvous mission. NASA ridiculed the part of the plot involving neutrinos, but seemingly ignored other aspects such as Yellowstone and crustal displacements.

Note: this is not an annual award, but one that seems to have coincided with a variety of anti-2012 reports in the media lately. Some feel that it is disinformation, and all the more reason to be concerned about 2012.
