Symposium: Maya Calendars and Creation
January 31, 2009
Showing impeccable timing, considering all of the sensationalist coverage of 2012 recently, is next week’s Sixth Annual Tulane Maya Symposium. Held at Tulane University in New Orleans it features many academic researchers including Anthony Aveni & Barbara and Dennis Tedlock. Hopefully some of the presentations, such as Ends of Time: The Maya Mystery of Creation 2012 will be made available to those unable to make the conference. Read more here.
2012 in Mainstream Media Again
January 29, 2009
This week a good number of Americans will have become exposed to the 2012 meme, if they hadn’t already heard of it….
New York Post, Jan 28 – 2012: The End is Nigh!
Mark Dec. 21, 2012 on your calendar. That’s the exact day that lots of normally sane people believe some disaster will befall our planet – and not the kind of annoying everyday disaster like your cable going out or Ethan Hawke writing another novel. We’re talking Biblical proportions – the end of life on Earth as we know it.
…He may not be the cheeriest fellow, but Geryl is committed. In Belgium, he’s formed a survival group of about 20 people who plan on buying land in Africa to start building the foundation for a new society. That will be after the Earth’s magnetic poles suddenly shift, causing a new Ice Age.
Universe Today: No Geomagnetic Reversal in 2012
January 28, 2009
A recent blog post at the excellent Universe Today continues arguing against predictions of doom in 2012. This time the focus is on Geomagnetic Reversals (aka magnetic pole shifts). It is a well written article, explaining the different types of pole shifts, and the science behind them. As far as debunking 2012 goes, he doesn’t do so well, stating the following…
The reasons behind the reversal of the magnetic poles is poorly understood…
We are not due a magnetic flip as we cannot predict when the next one is going to occur, magnetic reversals occur at seemingly random points in history.
Although the dynamics behind this event are not fully understood, there is absolutely no scientific evidence supporting the claim that there could be a geomagnetic reversal around the time of December 21st, 2012.
2012 Movie Pushed Back
January 22, 2009
Roland Emmerich’s “2012″ was supposed to open on July 10, but will now open on Nov 13th, reports Hollywood Reporter.
Sony execs said “2012″ could have been completed by its summer date, though the new date will add some extra time for the effects-laden production.
This time around, the studio has slotted its tentpole against two wide openers — Warner Bros.’ caper pic “Sherlock Holmes,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and Fox’s Dwayne Johnson comedy “The Tooth Fairy.” It wasn’t clear whether the arrival of “2012″ would prompt the departure of either of those pics for clearer pastures.
Skeptic Dismisses 2012
January 21, 2009
Benjamin Radford, managing editor of the Skeptical Inquirer, has an article at LiveScience.com, World to End in 2012 (Check Back for Updates), that starts off with this paragraph:
Three children were recently removed from a remote church compound called Strong City in New Mexico. There had been allegations that children at the cult may have been sexually abused, though the matter remains under investigation and charges have yet to be filed.
More 2012 Cartoons
January 18, 2009
Just as an example of how the 2012 meme is permeating society, two new newspaper cartoons have been created poking fun at the end of the Mayan calendar. They have appeared in Zits, a comic strip following the life of Jeremy Duncan, a fifteen-year old high school sophomore. It can be seen in over 200 newspapers. Follow the links to see them (too wide to show here):

Mayan Underground Pyramids
January 11, 2009
A labyrinth containing stone temples and pyramids, within 14 caves—some of which are underwater—have been discovered on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico.
This is an amazing discovery, and hopefully National Geographic will be providing more details in the near future. The article says:
According to Maya myth, the souls of the dead had to follow a dog with night vision on a horrific and watery path and endure myriad challenges before they could rest in the afterlife.
In one of the recently found caves, researchers discovered a nearly 300-foot (90-meter) concrete road that ends at a column standing in front of a body of water.
First 2012 Editorial Cartoon
January 8, 2009

Cartoonist “Bearman” believes he may have created the first ever editorial cartoon to poke fun at the 2012 topic.
I did a 20 second search of google and haven’t found anything poking fun at the next set of conspiracy theory doomsday predictors – 2012. I saw the movie trailer this past week and thought it was well done. Then I made a trip to the bookstore and noticed all the books on the subject (even one that is a How To Survive 2012 book).

Scar Symmetry: 2012 – The Demise Of The 5th Sun
January 6, 2009

Swedish “melodic death metal” band Scar Symmetry have made a couple of songs based on the 2012 meme; Timewave Zero on their 2008 album Holographic Universe, and 2012 – The Demise Of The 5th Sun, from Symmetric In Design (2005):
Pinnacle of evolution
The end of linear time
Progress or termination
Cosmic ray mutation
You can hear 2012 – The Demise Of The 5th Sun via this YouTube video (just a static album cover image with music).
