‘Web-bot project’ predicts 2012 apocalypse

September 29, 2009

Reported at the Telegraph this week is an interesting case of high-tech self-distorting prophecy. The “Web-bot project” is known for, according to some, predicting the 9/11 terrorist attack, although critics point our that a “world-changing event” in a 3-month window is not very specific.

The technology, originally designed to predict stock market movements, scours the web for chatter on topics, and when the chatter increases, they take that as a sign that something is due to happen, a sort of global consensus of web topicality. Consequently, with all the talk about 2012 as the movie and actual year approach, the “web-bot” has determined that something terrible will occur in Dec 2012. And in doing so, sites like this are reporting the story, which increases the chatter, and feeds the “web-bot”.

However, despite reports in the media, the most recent “web-bot” report, available for $10, only briefly mentions 2012. The style is typical of the 50-page report, and this fits in with it being written by a computer, not a human:

It is worth noting that the [break-away civilization] sub set is overtaking the [new electrics] sub set from the very late 2011 onward. The [alien war] sub set subsumes both the [new electrics] and [break-away civilization] sets over early 2011 through to the very last extent of our detail granularity which extends out to early 2012. There are some indications that the [break-away civilization] will play a pivotal role in the years of the [alien wars].

TV “roadblock” to promote 2012 movie

September 27, 2009

Sony have announced a television roadblock – where no matter which channel you turn to, you’ll see the same thing – to promote their 2012 movie that is being released in November. This is the largest ever promotion of this type for a movie.

“Television audiences watching virtually every major North American broadcast and cable outlet will have the opportunity to see an exclusive, two-minute scene from the film as part of this simultaneous roadblock on Thursday, between 10:50 P.M. and 11:00 P.M. EDT/PDT,” part of the press release read. The footage will air simultaneously on 450 TV outlets in North America.

Following the “roadblock”, a 5 minute sequence that shows the conclusion of the 2 minute clip will be made available to viewers, showing on both Fancast.com and on Comcast On Demand.

Jeff Hart on Bast v. Emmerich

September 25, 2009

Mixed in with an overview of the 2012 meme, Culture Blues writer Jeff Hart looks at the forthcoming 2012 movie – cities are destroyed in glorious fashion, people make impassioned speeches, and scrappy humans like us manage to survive against all oddsand Sony’s viral marketing for the movie – it’s a glossy, make-believe version of what Robert Bast’s Survive2012 site really is – a resource devoted to making sure some of us make like John Cusack – and compares it with the ideas of Robert Bast, who is actively preparing to survive 2012, despite not actually having a bunker yet. Hart gets the feeling that Bast is a more sincere Roland Emmerich, a smart guy on the fringe, attempting to cash in on our hunger for extinction.

Hart concludes:

If the internet’s foremost expert on 2012 (an honorary title I’m bestowing on Bast) doesn’t have his bunker ready yet, then there’s still time for me. Forget The IHC’s phony election – I’ve got three years to prepare.

Emmerich & Redfield on 2012

September 11, 2009

Roland Emmerich: For the longest time I said, “I don’t want to do disaster movies anymore.” I didn’t want to repeat myself — and then I came across together with [writer] Harald [Kloser] this one idea, which I thought made it worth it to do another disaster movie; it’s actually the very oldest story people tell each other. It’s the story of a flood, and how to survive it — like a Noah’s Arc’s re-telling, in a modern way. That theory was too good to not to do it. This is the mother of all disasters.

James Redfield (author of The Celestine Prophecy): Fear is the opposite of love which is the barometer of how it’s spiritually connecting us and to have to stay in love and stay in optimism based on that love. 2012 I believe is just one of those challenges and I do think we probably would have some severe challenges physically on the planet, storms and those kinds of things but I really think there’s a big sort of weight scale, balance scale, out there in the sky and as people buy into it with certain expectations that we’re going to have all of this apocalypse then we’re powerful enough to create that. So I think that were we are now is to learn to manage collectively and individually our creative power out there with our intentions, our beliefs, and our faiths which is of course all the scriptures from all the religions talk about. We do have faith power. We have to marshal that and learn and believe in it but yet also cultivate the right faith projection out there. So I believe that we should be really talking about 2013 and talk about what’s the new most ideal spiritual world we could imagine and what does that look like.
