Planetary Alignment? No Says NASA Scientist

On the website of NASA’s Astrobiolgy Institute is a suspiciously anonymous question:

What do you make of this theory that the Earth will be in direct alignment with the center of the Milky Way in December of 2012? There are many websites which list a series of events in our solar system, leading up to the alignment which will cause a catastrophic change in the Earth¹s rotation. I went to your Solar System Simulator at http://space.jpl.nasa.gov/ (Which is really cool by the way) and typed in a bunch of these dates. It looked to me like the Earth was still intact. Is this alignment with the center of the galaxy even provable?

The reply (from NAI senior scientist David Morrison) may appear to 2012ers as being quite confrontational:

You are correct, there is no planetary alignment in December 2012. As to “alignment with the center of the Milky Way” that is a meaningless phrase. It may sound scientific, but it is devoid of content. To put it bluntly, these claims on the Internet of alignments and catastrophe in December 2012 are lies. If more people were like you and checked out these crazy claims, we would all be better off.

As we creep closer to the date you stated (Dec. 2012) a lot is already changing. The earth herself is changing. You can see the gentle, and often times, not so gentle shifting that is occuring as we make our way to the “great shift” that many people target as 2012. Its an energetic shift.

There is more and more “light” being sent to the earth, cleansing her (just see the many earthquakes, tornados and such. This is not a bad or negative thing, and will never create “the end of earth and her inhabitants”, but more a shifting in our priorities. Shifting from a fear based, everyone out for themselves energy to one of compassion and love.

If you really look around, you can see that already happening. Get out of the gloom and doom of the media, and look at what is happening beneath the surface of our reality. These events are bringing people together, changing their priorities, and caring less about what they “have” and more about what they can do to help others.

You do not have to beleive my take on this, just sit back and watch the next few years unfold… and look beneath the surface of it all.

We are moving from fear… to compassion, and will quicken as we get closer to 2012 end date (actually it is a beautiful beginning date).

I have done much research on the 2012 “alignment”…well…as much as a layperson can do on the internet and other sources and the alignment that was predicted in Decembr of 2012 actually occures on December 4th. An alignment of the Sun, Earth and Jupiter. The information that I have found does not suggest that all of the planets will be in alignment.

Question: Where, in relation to the galactic plane, will the solar system be during the same period?

Is the talk about the dwarf star that maybe crashed into neptune at one point in time and suppose to be on its way back around by 2012 possible or true? I guess the arrival of this sun or star will bring many changes and the possibility of seeing two suns in the sky. Also what about this partical accelarator, has there been advances in it, does it even exsist?

I used the link to the web site attached above, which is an online interactive sky map. When I entered the date 2012, Dec 21st, to my amazement, the planets did align. I don’t know if I entirely believe that this will be the end of life, but it does make alot of sense. The weather and natural disasters have been getting worse every year, and though I believe global warming has alot to do with this, it also makes sense to believe that these events are occuring and getting worse as we near 2012. We all know what would happen if the earth shifted it’s axis by just a few feet. There indeed would be changes, noticable changes. Guess we’ll have to wait and see!

OMG, if you look how many times through our history that the planets have aligned, give me a break, 1968, 1983, May 2000 these were the same exact way it will occur on the Winter Solstice of 2012, the only difference is that in 1968 there was a lunar eclipse as well. People the planets are not going to kill us mankind will be the end to us. It is impossible to align all the planets, they are on different planes they are all within 9 degrees of each other, so sleep well, Christmas day 2012 will come and once again we will have averted the end of the world.

And you know what if it is the end there is nothing we can do about it so dont dwell and live your life. Has anyone ever thought that mabey the Mayans just quit on that date, they had to quit sometime.

I am confused of what they are saying about what will happen on dec 21 2012. Even if that happens (catastrophes) only we fear what we hear and see from them,, is it more more wiser if we just wait if it happens or not? lets forget about the future and live day by day, face our responsibilities (which is more challenging). For me the present is more important.

Many times in earth’s history there were meteor, comet crashes and it will happen again in the future. I don’t believe this 2012 tale. I think, we humans are sick, we like and we like to believe never ending disaster stories.
Please, we have to use our brains, live in peace on the only planet we can live.
There is a lot to say, but our brains are not developed enough to understand what
harms are we doing to our planet and ourselves.
Money and Power is our new God now…. If we continiou like this, we don’t need Nibiru, commet, planetary alignement etc. to destroy us….WE will destroy ourselves…

Why should I believe NASA? Don’t they cover up all pictures of planets presented to the public claiming national securety, UFO etc.? The thing to fear is that when the last three 26,000 year alignments occured it involved a pole shift or so science teaches us. This is where the outer crust of the earth quickly revolves around the core and what was the north pole becomes the south. When that happens what surface structures can survive? Especially if it occurs over an hours time or even several days? Believe what you want to, it’s your privilege, but at least do some research and don’t just believe what some talking head from any government agency tells you or you may be one of the disasters they say won’t happen. If we do have a pole shift will they blame it on a weather balloon?

I went to the Nasa site and did find we will have alignment of the planets that we have not had for 26,000 years and no one knows what will happen because no one on this earth has ever experienced this occurance. Many believe this is what caused the ice age, if the North and south poles of the magnetic fields did change to quickly or to slowly we would see some effects on earth, we already are loosing our glaciers too quickly from increase in planet temperature, this raises the sea levels, if they raise too quickly it will cause a great tsunami and would take out Florida and part of manhattan, we do know the end of the ice age was the begiining of the Mayan calendar coincidence I think not, learn where the safe vortex are and keep your eyes open folks, Nasa has a mission called the Kepler mission , it is to see if they can find another planet to habitat, it is due to go out again in 2009, don’t take my word for it check out Nasa’s web site, the results should be back by 2011, We have evidence of a great flood on this earth, on Dec 2012 the solar system will be at it’s maximum and no scientist on this earth can say for sure what will happen since this hasn’t occurred in 26,000 years

If there is an alignment where the Earth, the Sun, and a black hole at the center of the galaxy, is positioned behind the Sun, will it cause light to be drawn away from the Earth? Will it cause the tides of the seas to change? How long will these effects last?

There are a few religious prophecies that claim that there shall be three days of darkness that shall envelop the entire planet. Also that mountains shall fall into the sea. Could they be predicting such an alignment and its possible effects? (Such as icebergs being pulled rapidly southward during the winter while the North Pole of the planet is tilted away from the Sun during such an alignment?)

I do believe that we should prepare ourselves just in case we must endure this proposed adventure.

I was watching an episode of Decoding The Past on the History Channel that mentioned the possible changes that magnitizem COULD have on the rotation of the Earth and the movement of the Earth’s axis. This is suppost to be caused my the Earth’s mantle layer physically shifting and the inner portions remaining in place. According to them, the axis has changed before. They stated that 60 million years ago, the state of Alaska was positioned on the equator. IF the actual axis were to shift, I’m guessing it would change our orbit in some way. How long would it be before we crashed into another planet, moon or star? And what effect could this have on the rotation of the moon around Earth? Is it possible that mankinds abuse of the planet through mining of minerals and oil has put somekind of space or void between the layers of the Earth making this event actually possible sometime in the future?

Did the Earth’s current really stop in both 1996 and 2004? Could it be possible that a large enough iceburg melting and sliding into the ocean, while the current is stopped, could be enough force to change the dirrection of the current? If this were to happen suddenly, could it cause the mantle to shift; thus changing everything? I’m not impling this will happen, just exploring the “what if’s.”

Wake Up People. The Correct date for the end of the Myan Calander was Dec.21
2007. The Planets did align up to form a cross. Research the matter. The Begining of the Last Seven Years started with the anniversary of the 6 Day War, 40 years after Iseral became a Nation 1967. No man knows the hour or the day

I’m like everyone else. We DON’T know what will happen to the earth, etc. There has already been mention of the Mayan calendar ending on 12/21/12. Someone else mentioned December 4th. Recently the History channel did an episode on the lost book of Nostradamus. Before anyone pooh-pooh’s me on this, keep in mind that this was the man who predicted the Twin Towers catastrophy while he was still alive in the 15th century as well as many other historical occurrences over time.

Nostradamus used the Greek astrological system that has 13 astrological signs instead of the 12 that we use today. The 13th sign is the sign of Opheicus. According to the Greeks, Opheicus was the god who brought medicine and healing to the world. This sign rests between Scorpio and Sagittarius in the early part of December. Hence, I find credence in Mr. Fortier’s comments regarding December 4th. According to Nostradamus, when Opeheicus rests directly in the center of the Milky Way, the world as we know it will end. Personally, I don’t take this literally. I won’t deny that great physical changes most likely occur, but there will be a remnant of mankind left to start over. Only the heartiest will survive while billions will not. The illustrations in Nostradamus’ lost book (which by the way was found in the Vatican vaults) clearly identify a strong Christian/Islamic struggle at this time. So, the upheaval could be a result of natural causes, i.e., the poles shifting or, the change could occur as a result of mankind finally reaching the maximum height of insanity as someone finally pulls the trigger on a missle and the rest of the world reacts.

All I can say is that I am starting to stock up and store now. I may not survive, but it won’t be for trying.

nasa canot say anything they want. neither can television shows or radio stations or news papers. how do you tell billions of people you think the world will end. why would you say something when you can have youre own place above sea level and save your family. there will be physical changes on this planet and unfortunately we have to deal. for those who know its n o t going to end you are right. for those of you who know it w i l l prepare you and ppl you love and who will listen. remember cant help those who dont want it. if you people are even looking up on this its because of certain doubt. i personally think i will be living somewere that is is secure and above sea level in 2012 so will my mother my father my brother and my sister. if it hapends i have a bigger chance and if it dosint ill be super happy and will forever live an unstressfull life!

i firmly believe that something is going to happen in 2012 whether it is natural or man made to fulfill prophecy. Jesus got away with prophecy fulfilment through having a better education than the thousands he was fooling and our governments are more than capable of doing it again for thier own gain and power. I think the planets come out of their positions at the end of the yuga. And also u find eagle nebulas resembling Sumeru gods, egyptian gods and a hindu god, Garuthmantha who is a vehicle of Sri vishnu. Also alienlike beings behind the clouds. Nasa says it is a gaseous clouds. Do not forget gods does not have a physical body and they depend on yagnas which we perform. Only earthly beings have physical bodies I am very much shocked to see them. Do not think it is all nonsense. I am not mentioning about religion. Search for yourself and decide the truth.

authoritys openly admitting that 21/12-2012 is the end of the world and life as we know it…Of couse not all life on earth will die, and the various amounts of survivors will naturally keep the show going in any way what so ever

The Son dying on the cross are actually the SUN on the cross in the middle of the Zodiac …

Yeah it may not go down on 2012 but I believe “the end of the age” (earth) is coming in our lifetimes. The interesting thing about Bible prophesy is that it all came true except some things yet to come. The book of Daniel predicted the fall of the Romans, Greeks, and Persian empires.

It appears that we stand at the threshold, a prelude of Revelation 13. We have in our presence today a man whose image moves across the globe. The nations are to a point of worshipping this image of a man whose agenda in their eyes pivots on “hope, change and peace.” Throughout the world they cheer and lift his name as though he’s a type of savior. We now have a coin made in his special honor and toys for our children to play with…how far will this go? Hmm…four million as a projected number will be gathering to see this man inaugurated January 20th 2009 and this doesn‘t include the internet and television. How many Christian’s are under the spirit of stupor? The Lord tells us about a 42 month period we should be mindful of. Forty-Two months is “three and half years.” Church, wake up!

Let us be mindful of our Lord’s “Ten Commandments” and His warning to the immoral people and idol worship. Pay attention to God’s history of the bible…history repeats itself. They say, December 21st 2012 our planet comes into perfect alignment (according to the Mayan Calendar) with the center of our galaxy (the Milky Way). All who follow this hogwash are worshippers and followers of a 5,200 year old calendar and Nostradamus. Those who follow a rapture doctrine are in the same category with “the hogwash followers.” Some might say the bible is hogwash and so it is to the ignorant. I think that we should make our research by ourselves, because NASA is hiding always information to the people, we have different backgrounds and we are from everywhere following these kind of scientific news, the point is that Maya Calender is perfect, nothing went wrong with them,so, why do we should to say nothing is gonna happen and live your life peacefully? We need to keep the serenity, but we need to know the truth, the real truth that comes from a serious research that regular people are doing, because I don’t believe all that NASA and another space agencies (Russians, Chinese) said to the world. At the end, it doesn’t matter if it happrns or not, we just need to be prepared all of us, because if it comes, you can avoid it, just prepare and if nothing happens, keep going with your family, because life is precious and is just one time.

Call me crazy but,….what if maybe, just maybe the One we all seek for the right answers, is guiding us where we need to be. Nothing happens by chance, and for me the information I have asked for has been coming to me in many ways. Think about this a moment, look through the telescope and see what is out there, You all have great comments, your all intelligent people. If you ask for the truth it will come. Wait or research, however you wish to obtain your answers, you will get them. As for the web or TV try to remember who controls the information let down rate. You need to compile as much information from all direction and sources as possible to be able to come up with an educated decision about the things that may or may not be happening. If you are biased towards government agencies, like NASA, and only stick to the information you get from 2012 websites, you've just successfully turned yourself into an ill informed, biased, doomsayer. You can apply that same thing to some one that believes in a literal translation of the Bible. A great majority, if not all of them think that scientists have an "anti-god" agenda, so will not contemplate any answers that science has to offer that doesn't support what they want to hold onto believing.
And another thing, don't take any of the comments you see on here as being completely honest, There are a lot of liars that seem to like to mess with less informed peoples minds. Look up information for yourself. Here's a couple of sites to start you off..

Nor should you be closed minded because you may have studied something in college or because you work at one of these government agencies. If I remember correctly, the general public was still being told that the world was flat when Columbus sailed the ocean blue. I doubt the king would have supported him if the king thought the world was flat. In 1940 the government stated that it would be hundreds of years before man could travel fast enough to visit other planets.
Don't misunderstand, I'm not against the government but I am against government lies even if they think they are protecting me. Also, you gave me a web address, which I've visited prior to your reference. I could give you hundreds of web sites also but there are plenty of other sources both pro and con towards a pole shift., including published papers of some of the worlds greatest minds such as Einstien, Telsla and many others. As far as UFO's, more than 65% of the people have seen them or at least believe they exist dispite every official agency denying they exist. When I worked at the cape, I saw many of them. It has been funny reading the post. So just for a laugh remember the writings of Duglas Adams and be sure you have your towel. If we have an ice age you can cover up with it for add warmth. it's a smokescreen to keep you from seeing what is really the issue…fact is the sun only contains enough "gas" to burn for 500,000 years, this is science… so it is not possible for the idea of 60 M years to have taken place when another fact is that the land mass above sea level is 400,000 yo and the crust below the ocean is only 200,000 yo, again, no room for 60 M years…

I don't believe that the earth will end in 2012, but the facts are as follows:
We are approaching the end of a another 26000 year cycle, within that cycle there are four cycles each spanning 6480 years. During the first cycle which occurred approximately 26000 years, mankind and homo sapient were virtually installed on earth, 19500 years ago we had the glacial epic, 13000 years ago we had a massive global die off of over 90 percent of flora and fauna destroyed and 6500 years ago we had the great flood. It took approximately 1375 years for civilization to be born almost out of nothing after the last 6500 year cycle . It is logical to conclude that after every 5125 year cycle period we find ourselves recovering from a cataclysmic event on earth. We are approaching the end of another 6500 year cycle which interesting enough ends December 21, 2012. More interestingly, on that day the sun will experience its maximum emissions, the 26000 year wobble of the earth will end, the the planetary alignments will occur and we might experience electromagnet emissions from the Galactic center that is much greater that what we receive from the Sun today. Polar shift , earthquakes and so on are the end result of our passage through the galactic equator. No on knows what will happen on earth during this period. Its a guess. These are the facts as I learned them over the years. You think it through for yourself and do the math. Well, technically, the planets will never perfectly align. If you are looking at it from a 2-D perspective (from above) it seems that they would. However, if you look at a 3-D perspective, you will see that the planets are not all on the same level.

If I had a dime for everytime the world "was supposeed to end", I would be rich by now. We need to be logical & not get emotional about this. If the earth "DOES" go through some sort of alignment and everything blows up, and gets consumed into a black hole after being hit by a meteor and gets sucked into the sun because of the gravitational forces, then we be will NOT be around to care, right? Problem solved. Last one off the earth, turn off the lights!!!

Nothing is going to happen in 2012. Everyone needs to look at the facts, not theology. There is no planetary alignment in 2012 and as far as aligning with the center of the galaxy, aren’t we always aligned with the center. Maybe when our solar system travels downward to the dense parts it would be closer, but we are far too far away to have anything to happen but staying around the galaxy. As far as I’m concerned the Earth isn’t going to end until we are no longer in the safe zone from the Sun and the Sun is still going to live for another 5 billion years.
An asteroid can hit us like the dinosaurs, but as far as NEAR is conserned nothing is going to hit us anytime soon. Therefore, the only way the world is going to end is manmade and if we let it. There have been predictions of the end of the world sine the intellegent mind has come into existence. People need to stop freaking out about this and start knowing facts, not religion, mythology, media, or just plain speculations. If it happens it happens. Live your life fully without fearing the worst.

I do not claim at all that I know what is happening, and yes..change can be aggresive. But for the most part…asteroids..yes, they can be undetected and sudden at times…but whole planets? Not even close… And as far as pole shifts etc (I know you didnt mention this in your post) but it's funny how human nature is to dramatise everything… Pole shifts or changes in the Earths crust more specifically, are known to happen over millions of years… Again, I can't prove anything. But science can… Think about it guys, let's also use common sense. A comet not long ago, crashed into Jupiter, and left a scar the size of the Earth, quite literally. I know its a huge planet, but it still looks like Jupiter to me, and its still spinning. Just trying to get perspective. If Im honest, I have moments where I feel scared…But Do some research into the past. This Planet X etc…was meant to appear many years ago, and every single time…it never showed up. We all woke up the next day, sun shining, still alive…

Has anyone though that this could be the case with 2012?

I`ve also researched this 2012 mayan calendar date scenario, and after much research scientists have proven there is a huge mass in the middle of the galatic plane. I watched BBC Horizon a couple of weeks ago and they proved there is a huge mass there fact. How did the mayans know this? through recorded history, or given the knowledge perhaps? We should be careful to debunk these claims as the science is there to prove it, just do the research yourself. Not just from one source but many. Hopefully nothing will happen during this period, But again the fact is all the planets have been heating up during the last few years, so can we really say that global warming is really affected just by Co2 emmisions? I dont think so again the science is there, obviously Co2 emmisions contribute to this but dont have a huge bearing on what might happen. I just look at the hard facts, so just keep this in your mind for the next few years and if changes happen then people might want to look in to this.

About your comment. How is the planet going to align with the center of our galaxy, in theory seeing as we are on a branch of the galaxy, we are already aligned. Furthermore, if a black hole were to suck us all in, then why have none of the other black holes done so already. You are right that black holes "bend" time, but our galaxy is insignificant in comparison to the universe, which (if the theory is true) when it was created, would be the start of time (around 1.5 x 10^11 years ago). Please don't spread nonsense to scare people even if your only joking around, as some people take this quite seriously. Though I agree that many misunderstand Christianity and its roots, I would also say that you missed the point too.

The whole point of Judaism, as they we regular pagans like all the other ancient cultures, was to get a group of people out of that system of creation worship. The God of the Jews, wanted them to get away from worshipping the sun, and wanted them to use the heavenly skies as a calendar for signs of the seasons and the years. He wanted them to not focus on the creation as a source of spiritual help, but for them the focus on the Creator of the creation as the source of spiritual life. With this practice it assured that there would be a group of people on earth who would be ready to have the SON of God come to the earth and who would recognize His coming from a sign in the sky (recall the star the wise men followed). So the sign of the sun in the sky only continues to point to and confirm the death and rise in Christ, not the other way around. The Creator designed the signs( or “calendar”) that way. The wise men knew it!

Yes, Jesus was and is real, and he is REALLY the son of the Living God. But the scriptures given above as end of the world predictions are wrong. Mark and Matt (which is the same conversation recorded by different men) is discussing when the end of the age…the Mosaic age, was coming. They were not talking about the end of the world, a non-existent world. The language Jesus is using is CLEARLY old Testament prophetic language. The Stars falling is a reference to the old power falling, and so is the rest of the language. In fact, if one does a study of the Old Testament, you will find this exact language when ever the prophets foretell of the fall of Israel.

No one can say what will happen in the future, but I don't think you can count anything out. If you are religious and by that I mean Christian then the Bible taught that during the time of Noah, no one believed the flood was coming. Everyone thought Noah was crazy until the flood came. As people we have no control over when something will happen. It is in God's hands. Some say they will be here in 2012 as if they know it for fact. Some of us are not here today. We will all pass away someday. The 2012 hysteria stems from the fact that people are not prepared to die. We live in a constant state of fear. the alignement is not to be considered real with the planets because it's impossible but you have to considered the view from earth and in real situation and also take in considaration the ecliptic and equinox and position planets for the eye from the earth in the sky.

But even in this case you'll see that it has happend a lot of time already!!!

(mass hysteria, riots, etc…) ; but when most of the world population already thinks the world is going to end(the movie helped give this idea), they should explain. Maybe we should be ready. And while they (The gov) are at it ; they need to explain the underground city beneath the Denver airport. And many more just like it around our country. Global Warming is crap. Al Gore achieved the Nobel Prize for lying. Many events in the past have been linked to solar activity. Ice Ages in the past have also been linked to the rise of Mount Everest and many other events. In the 1800's in the "year without a summer", a volcano was responsible. Even in mid evil times, temperature increases and decreases have been linked to solar activity. The polar ice caps melting is normal. During the Ice Age around 12,000 years ago or so, there was less ocean. The US was larger due to large amounts of water being locked in the ice. The Ice melts and the ocean rises, it's nothing new, it's happened time and time again in the past. People just overreact and lie.

If the Supermassive Black Hole in the center of the galaxy where to destroy the earth (which is very unlikely, close to nothing) it would most likely be from a Gamma Ray Burst. What you have to realize is that Gamma Ray Bursts travel at least 99.9% the Speed of Light. Meaning that if it where to release a GRB we would be at one end of the galaxy and the burst would have to travel to the other end as we get there. It's hard to explain, because space is so big it takes light a long time to travel. For example, Lets say that the Supermassive Black Hole in the core of the galaxy is 60k light years away. Traveling at the speed of light, the GRB would take 60k years to reach us. Meaning we would be at one end of the galaxy when the GRB is released, it would be 60k years later before we even see it. So the GRB would have to be launched 60k years in advance and in the exact position of where the earth will be in 60k years.

On top of that Gamma Ray Bursts only travel at 99.9% the speed of light, so it would be even more than 60k years (60k is just an example, not the actual distance from the core to the earth) before it hits us. If that makes sense, the odds of it hitting are far to low for it to happen. Not impossible just as close to impossible as you could get without it being impossible. It could come from a nearby star, most likely a WR Star (Wolf-Rayet). I believe it was WR-104 that they suspected but recent observations have shot the possibility out the window. I don't buy the center of the galaxy crap at all. Correct me if i'm wrong on that explation, I was trying to think of an easy way to explain that but couldn't. Personally the way I look at it, if it's the end than it's the end and there's nothing I can do. Just accept it and make peace with god (or whoever/whatever you believe in), but that's just me.

The skeptics continue too claim that nothing will happen in 2012, that there will be no solar maximum to talk about. They claim that planet x is just a figment of the imagination, that extreme global changes are as normal as night and day. Galactic alignment and all that stuff - no such thing they say. In a nutshell they think this doomsday stuff is complete fiction. How can you have trust in these people. I can only hope that should anything dire occur around that time they will be around to keep you calm and explain why they were lying to you all along. I am eagerly waiting to see how events are going to play out. My gut feeling tells me that we are in for a very rough ride in a couple years from now, mark my word

Alignment in this case is an eclipse of the Sun against the Galactic center, wherein the Sun appears to rise in direct line with the center of the Milky Way Galaxy as viewed from the Earth. Probably improbable, but why not plant a apple tree or two, and keep some extra food and water handy. Usually it is what you never expect to happen that gets you. For example ,world wide nuclear war. Pray, keep your slate clean, and prepare for the worst. You take out insurance on your car, house, body and maybe your dog… Why not take out a little world wide end of civilization insurance. Keep seeds, they are cheap. Plant some fruits instead of ornamental plants. Hens are cute and don't need a rooster to lay eggs, they like leftovers too. Classic books to read, don't require electricity. A cistern is a lovely feeling of water security. Good luck, and may God bless you all.
