Professor weighs in on predicted apocalypse

Brown Daily Herald (a university newspaper) reports this week on 2012 predictions.

Patrick Geryl (pictured) says that the South African Kingdom of Lesotho is the safest place to be, when the world comes to a “volcano-erupting, tidal-wave-crashing, nuclear-reactor-melting end.”

One of the world’s leading experts on the Mayan civilization, Professor Stephen Houston, says that just one of many Mayan cycles will end in 2012, and “that the end is neither significant nor relevant.”

Also mentioned in the article is how some people are aiming to make money from 2012 survivalists. Dennis McClung of 2012supplies.com is profiled.

I feel that everybody is concentrating on the major evils of 2012. They feel that it will be the end of the world and everything on it. Yes i agree the cycle we are in puts us at the point in our Galaxy where we are most vunerable and the last time we passed this particular point the dinosaurs exsisted and when we left it they were gone and mammles were around.
If we look at our planet we are using its resources up quicker than they are replenished, we feel that we are masters of our own destiny (yet our forefathers and ancestors knew different). Past humans have faced the planets most violent eras such as super volcanoes and massive island slips and continental shelf shifts. Our ancestors lived with these and coped, But and i repeat but they lived with the planet and didnt rape or pillage it, they took only what they needed not more like we do now. The planet as we all know is getting close to crisis point and can no longer support the human race in its current form or size. remember we will soon be fighting over water let alone food.
Therefore i feeel that the ancients were trying to tell us that 2012 is the the date that mother earth will rebel and tell us that enough is enough and it is time i took conntrol again. I feel that the human race will adapt and realise that we need to live with nature and not kick against it and the answer will be those that live with nature will survive those that cant adaot will perish. I feel that makind is about to enter another era hopefull a golden era and one where we can once again become one with the planet

Bob, you need to do some research and investigate the phenomenon of 2012 some more. While you’re at it learn English grammar and spelling! There will be apocalyptic times starting with an economic collapse world-wide in 2009-2010. Then in the next couple of years there will be changes in the earth’s crust that will cause volcanic reactions, tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. Over the last 5.5 billion years, since the earth was formed, these changes have been happening constantly. I believe that this is the first time major changes will take place while man is inhabiting the earth. I believe that if man were a spiritual enough of a being that these changes could be slowed down or even eliminated but due to our lack of belief in God, who is in control but allows His natural laws to flow, these changes will take place, in our lifetime.

It doesn’t matter wether you agree with 2012 or not. It will come and go wether you believe or not. Life will continue wether you do or not. Each day is going to pass regardless, and if we are lucky, we will grow old enuf to realize how self indulgent we were, and if not, we won’t. Nothing realy matters because everything that is suppos to happen, is going to. End of story. So be thankful, be happy, or die. I don’t care, as long as you have a job and not sucking off the welfare/disability system!

It always amazes me how rude and ungracious people are to each other. You all have a right to your opinions but why must you attack someone for theirs? It seems most people who attack others instead of just stating what their position is on a subject do so because they really have no intelligent comments to make RE: the subject at hand.
Nobody knows what is going to happen 4 years from now so why don’t we concentrate on helping the communities we live in. I do have my own “opinion” to what may or may not happen, but that is all it is….an opinion.

Ok, I came here to possibly find an educated opinion on this, sense any real educated person wouldnt sit here and demand that their opinion becomes law. In any case, the original rumor started with the mayans, yes, but what really started making people wonder was nostradamus’ prediction. Also, what everyone seems to be missing here, is that something DOES happen that day. Its the day all the planets in our solar system are perfectly aligned with the center of the galaxy. The real question is will that have any effect on our planet, or will things just continue as always? that is a SCIENTIFIC question, not one based on religious fervor.

Intrigued by the wealth of sites devoted to all things Fortean, freakish, marginal and weird, I clicked through a seemingly endless Borgesian Library created by people from all walks of life, thought, work and faith. Many of them were interested in (not to say obsessed with) the upcoming Big Change. They could be Christian fundamentalists predicting the Rapture, Talmudic Bible decoders, New Agers into [ascension, crop circles, channeling, etc.], students of the I Ching, Nostradamus or Terence McKenna. Ummm….has anyone actually realized…its a calander. It HAD to end sometimes. What…you think they were going to go on and on and on making it till they died out? No. It was a calander, simple as that. It just so happens that they ended it in 2012. So…

At the same time…you can feel it in the air that this planet and this race is headed into some sort of change in the future. I dont think it will be in 2012, but soon enough, everything is going to change. Whether is be a noosphere…a leap in evolution ala X-Men…who knows.

Will we be alive to see any of this…again…who knows. All I know is that none of you have likely got it right. You are all simply guessing. There is no evidence except for a sinlge calander carved in stone that just happened to be stoped at 2012…thats it.

If it is true that on Dec. 21, 2012 polar shifts take place due to our sun and earths alignment to the center of the galaxy which has been predicted by a number of previous civilizations and people from our past and books including the bible. Then it would be prudent for over the next four years that people get their act together so that we can continue as a species. Forget your religious beliefs and who's property that your ancestor's stole because it won't be there anymore! that beach front house that cost a million bye bye. I have been in a hurricane, a 7/0 earthquake, It SCARED the crap out of me but i did get through it. Get a Plan, and a safe location to minimize your terror. and don't wait till the last minute to act. A wise man said once. " You must learn from the past if you are going to live in the future". As for me I believe this has a lot of validity. By the way money as we know it will be useless. Gold and silver and commodities to trade will be the tools of barter. And forget about using any computer or phone to communicate with. At least for a long time. to much to think about huh. I hope i am wrong.

I'm convinced something is going to occur 12/21/2012. I'm just not not sure how big a something. If the tides can be predicted, I have no doubt that a more powerful magnetic force could have a greater effect on the oceans. I'm curious to hear more thoughts on 2012.

I believe that the Planet Nibiru is coming around into our solar system between Mars and Jupiter and that it will have a major effect on our planet such as earth quakes, tsunamis and so on because of the gravitational pull a planet 8 times our size would naturally have on a solar system when entering it every 3,600 years. I also believe that bthe inhabitants of said planet will visit or are visiting us prior to warn and help and still some other beings might want us to just parish in the event

Over the last week or so since my last posting i have researched the possibilities of all these events and have come to the conclusion that their is a potential for something to happen. there are many events that quote" are due". around this time frame from alien contact and warnings to asteroids major earthquakes and caldera eruptions. this is the world we live in and these things happen . accept it and deal with it

The sumarians who were the first civilization had it pretty much all spelled out for us. It later became what is known as religion. Those who couldn't explain the unexplainable considered those who visited us over those times is explained how what when and why and where. they were written tablets which not until recently made any sense. planet x or nibiru is supposedly due to cycle around our solar system as it has done for billions of years. it is believed to be 4 to eight times the size of the earth and fits oh so nice between mars and jupiter just outside the asteroid belt. however it is on a orbit unlike the other planets it is on a different orbiting path. it is thought that through its many cycles it tends to gravitate other objects into the solar system. and this may be the cause of the of the great catastrophies that may take place. NASA isn't saying much about it maybe because if they did it would send the world into panic. don't fear we are being watched. At least according to history and some scientists who have really been gathering info on the ufo theory. Its amazing that the government hasn't even breathed anything even remotely about any of this. why all the space shows star trek, etc. coincident.? or just a slow acceptance to the real truth.

2012 Is not the end of the earth. Its simply an end of civilization as modern man knows it. Its a beginning not an end. It wont be pretty and it will be nasty for our current way of living, but it will also be a new start and a new way of living. there has been a recent trend on the 2012 event that is supposed to take place . for example, a new beginning. well yeah! it will be a new beginning after everything else fails and 3/4 of the earths population is not around t appreciate it. All of what is believed to happen in 2012 may or may not happen but everybody is seeing this in a great deal of over opostrated delema, i know i spelt that wrong but im 15 leave me alone, i belive that we are all "God" to you religeous folks out there and i have more proof that we are than you have that we arn't, in the predesscence that my theory of the philosophy of religiality is correct, they will happen one by one worsening as they go along until there is no life left, then we rebirth ourselves in the forms of others just as we have done before and have been doing for all possible eternity, the best thing people can do, in my opinion, to protect from the apocolypse of 2012 is to be blissfully unaware and it may go away if the subconsciencse, (which i say is the divine creation that is testing us like this), will make it go away, if not…. too bad we lived before, i say bring it on ill take whatever they can throw at us head first and headstrong.

Interestingly, with all the talk of "apocalypse", everyone has it wrong from the very start. You see, the complete phrase is "apocalipsis eschaton", meaning "revelation of the end times". "Apocalipsis" is "revelation" and "eschaton" is end times. So what everyone is talking about is the Eschaton (end times), not apocalypse (revelation) because a revelation can be about anything, not just the Eschaton!

Now, as far as things that can happen, well, that's wide open and there won't be any warning. I remember the day before hurricane Andrew hit where I live. It was a nice, sunny day, light breeze, and nothing unusual. I was sure that the talk of a hurricane was a bunch of weather forecaster hype because I saw nothing going on to tell me something disastrous was headed my way. Next day, everything was changed. We had no power for six weeks, no phone for four months. Stay awake and don't get cocky, those of you who think you know it all and are 'sure" nothing will happen.

the bible says no man knows the time of the end not the angels or the Son only the Father knows.Matthew 24:29 says "Immediately after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened,the moon will give no light,the stars will fall from the sky,and the powersin the heavens will be shaken.Regardless of the mayan calendar or anything of that nature these things could be the beginning of birth pangs described by Jesus in Matthew 24.So it in my opinion is good to take note of these happenings and to be watchful and pray.

I would research polar shifting and polar reversal these are the forces that will do the damage to earth and we don't know what effect it may have on our planet.the sumarians are the ones that could provide us with the answer.

The Mayan calendar is NOT like our calendar, it goes backwards, that is why the calendar ends, but it goes in cycles. It is just the end of the cycle, which happens to be a focal point of a lot of astrological events. I think the worst that could happen is our magnetic pole shifts, and perhaps high tides from the increased gravitational pull with the planets aligning along with the black hole in the center of our galaxy. I think the most affected will be our electronic equipment from the magnetic pole shift and perhaps tsunamis or coastal flooding

2012 will be the beggining of the end. What i mean is the gay community will overthrow the world. Eventually whith everyone being gay their will be no more child births, and that will lead to the end of the human race. There will also be no more football and no beer.
