Elvis and 2012

May 17, 2012

Yes, there is a connection – one of Elvis’ famed white jumpsuits had an image of the ancient Aztec Sun Stone Calendar embroidered on it. And the Sun Stone was the Aztec reinterpretation of the Mayan Long Count Calendar. Now Elvis loved exotic imagery, so the Aztec calendar was part of a range of images that appeared on his jumpsuits, such as peacocks, Inca gold leaf, and a Chinese dragon. But this is the suit he wore the most in his final year alive, and he also wore it during his last ever concert.

Interestingly, especially for those who think 2012 is connected to numerology, the Aztec image on Elvis’ jumpsuit has 16 points around the outside, and 8 on the inside – seemingly pointing to the day he died: Aug 16 1977.

Michael C. Luckman, author of Alien Rock: The Rock ‘n’ Roll Extraterrestrial Connection, said that ”Elvis felt that the Mayans were right on target with their so-called doomsday calendar, so much so that the King wore a jumpsuit featuring the Mayan calendar“. Although this is remotely possible, the general public had not heard of the Long Count calendar back then, and had Elvis known of it, he’d surely also be describing the image as Aztec.

The jumpsuit can be seen on display at Graceland.

Nibiru / Planet X – The Truth

May 10, 2012

This is a humourous video, but it basically points out many of the faults with the whole idea of Nibiru returning in 2012:

End of the World in 2012: 1-in-10 Say Yes

May 4, 2012

This is the first time I have seen a major, authentic poll on the subject of “end of the world” beliefs, and the results are surprising. Across the world, 10% of people agree with that the Mayan Calendar marks the End of the World in 2012. How the question was received across numerous languages is hard to tell, but the Chinese appear to be the biggest believers:

China: 20%
Turkey: 13%
Russia: 13%
Mexico: 13%
South Korea: 13%
Japan: 13%
USA: 12%
Argentina: 12%
Hungary: 12%
Poland: 12%
Sweden: 11%
France: 10%
Spain: 10%:
Belgium: 9%
Canada: 9%
Australia: 9%
Italy: 7%
South Africa: 7%
Britain: 7%
Indonesia: 4%
Germany: 4%

The survey was conducted by Ipsos Reid. The poll was conducted among 16,262 adults in 21 countries.

A clearer and perhaps more telling question was ‘will the world come to an end during my lifetime,’ with 14% of people agreeing globally. It would have been nice if the reason was ascertained, especially if the reason was relgious in nature – for that is something that some folk actively desire.

Perhaps the most important and most telling question put to respondents was ‘have you been experiencing anxiety or fear because the world is going to end in 2012.’

(8%) of global citizens agrees – 2% strongly, 6% somewhat. Most (92%) disagree with the statement (80% strongly, 12% somewhat). Those in Russia (14%) appear to have the highest level of anxiety, followed by Poland (13%), China (12%), Turkey (11%) and Japan (11%). Those in Great Britain (4%) are least likely to agree, followed by 5% in Germany, Australia and Canada.

2% of 2 billion people is 40 million. That’s a lot of people that have been strongly affected by the ancient Mayan prophecy, while those somewhat affected literally number in the hundreds of millions. Does this just mean an increase in Valium prescriptions in December, or will the anxieties have deeper effects?

Post-Apocalyptic Art

April 11, 2012

Ever wondered what the world will like post-2012-SHTF? Well artist Lori Nix has imagined just that, and created a series of paintings, The City, that show everyday locations – like the beauty shop above – after humans have left the scene. See them all here:

Killing Joke’s Jaz Coleman on 2012

April 9, 2012

Jaz Coleman, of the rock band Killing Joke, lives on an island off the coast New Zealand these days. He’s been in NZ since 1991. Perhaps it is not a coincidence that he is a conspiracy theorist, and the new Killing Joke album is titled MMXII (2012 in Roman numerals). The opening track is Pole Shift:

The earth’s geomagnetic current is diminishing in power; the worry is that this is a prelude to a complete pole flip. Magnetic north, you see, is meant to be moving at a rate of two inches every ten years, right now it’s moving at 70km a year. It has left Canada and is now hurtling towards Siberia as we speak.

Myth: SETI and the 2012 Spaceships

March 21, 2012

Over at Cosmic Log is a nice summary of the most a 2012 fabrication that was doing the rounds. The poor chap at the center of it all joined our forum purely to help tell his side of the story, to remove his name from the deception. The origin is similar to many such stories (Nibiru, Hollow Earth) – it started with an image. Keen amateur researchers can spend months or years looking through archived material, seeking any anomalies. Then when they do, perhaps due to excitement, or just inexperience, they fail to ask an expert what could cause that anomaly. Sometimes the images are on Google Earth, and the anomaly is simply an artifact of a photographic or computer process. In this case, the blue-green shapes were clearly flaws in the photographic plates that were digitized for the sky survey. In each of the three cases, emulsion problems showed up in one of the color-coded plates but not the others — which explained the bluish color.

So, be wary of any “evidence” that is dependent on an image, and experts have not been sought to provide an alternative explanation for what appears in the photo.

Tortuguero Monument 6 – Not Unique After All

March 18, 2012

This Mayan monument has been much discussed in academic circles, due to it apparently prophesying the descent of a god(s) in 2012.

…(long ago) it happened, the day Eight Chuwen, the ninth of Mak
when the Becoming-Ripe-House was constructed(?).
It was the ‘underground house’ (shrine) of (the god) Ahkal K’uk’.
It was two and nine-score days, three years, eight-score years and 3 x 400 years
(before) the Thirteenth Bak’tun will end
on Four Ajaw, the third of Uniiw,
when ..?.. it will occur,
the descent..?.. of B’olon Yookte’ at ..?..

The authors of this translation, which added fire to some doomsday theories, have now stated that this monument is not unique as they originally thought, and that it should not be taken so seriously:

Whatever Monument 6 has to tell us pertains to the dedication of the building associated with the sculpture. It has nothing to do with prophecy or the supposed, dread events that await us in AD 2012. About that the Maya are notably silent…or, truth be told, a bit boring.

2012er Couple Arrested – Possible Homicide

March 13, 2012

Back in January, Logan Welles McFarland, 24, and Angela Marie Hill, 25, were arrested and accused of home burglary, violent carjacking and possible double homicide.

The arrest warrant does not directly connect McFarland or Hill to the shooting deaths of Leroy Woody Fullwood, 70, and his wife, Dorothy Ann Fullwood, 69. However, in other papers filed in 6th District Court, investigators say, “The state of Utah considers Logan Welles McFarland a person of interest in the deaths of the two … Mt. Pleasant residents.”

…”He kind of bought into the whole ‘the world was going to end in 2012′ thing and didn’t really care what was going to happen after that day,” he said. “He thought things weren’t going to exist after the new year.”

At present the preliminary hearing is underway:

Hill, and codefendant Logan Welles McFarland, 24, of Colorado allegedly stole a car in Utah and drove to West Wendover, according to the prosecution.

Witnesses said they attempted to kidnap Keomanivong and steal her car, resulting in a struggle between Hill and the victim while McFarland followed behind in a separate car

Keomanivong was later shot it the head (and survived), and although it seems likely one of the accused pulled the trigger, it is hard to tell who did.

The couple reportedly had drug problems, but the 2012 angle is of concern. If people think the end is nigh, they are liable to act unusually. It could be anything from robbing a bank to telling someone that you love them. Back in 999AD it was commonly believed the a religious doomsday would occur – so much so that prisoners were released and debts forgiven.

Doomsday Preppers is a Hit

February 13, 2012

Doomsday Preppers, the 10-part TV series, premiered on National Geographic channel Tuesday, and a whopping 4 million American people tuned in. That makes it the most viewed Nat Geo show ever for a Tuesday.

Hopefully the message will get through to many of the viewers, in case there is a catastrophe this year (or in the future…)

Chevy Super Bowl Advert

February 4, 2012

Only two products survive the apocalypse: Chevy Silverado and Twinkies. Fords didn’t make it… The ad features common 2012 themes like volcanic eruptions and UFOs, but they also slipped in some raining frogs for good measure.
